English Heritage ![]() English Heritage looks after 3 properties of National Importance here on the Isle of Wight. The first is Carisbrooke Castle, which is located in the centre of the Island at Carisbrooke, just outside the county town of Newport. Here students can find out about this historic building and perhaps its' most famous guest. Charles I was imprisoned at Carisbrooke Castle before he was taken to Whitehall to be executed during the English Civil War. Osborne
House is the former home of Queen Victoria.
This beautiful property is located at Whippingham, just south
of East Cowes. This fantastic property has grounds
which extend down to the shoreline of the
Solent. Many of the rooms to Osborne are
open to the General Public and it offers a fascinating
insightin to the lifestyle, achievements and family of Queen Victoria. Originally a holiday home for the Queen and her beloved Prince Albert, it became her permanent place of residence after his death. ![]() Yarmouth Castle, towards the western tip of the Island watches over travellers as they enter the harbour on the Wightlink Ferry. It was the last of Henry VIII's great coastal defences and was completed after his death in 1547. Within the castle there is a display of how the 16th century rooms would have looked and also a display of the many wrecks which occurred in the hazardous waters over which the castle surveys. |
